Club Annual Review 2018

Our Club meets at 10.15 for 10.30 am on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays each month in the Somerton House Hotel, 35, Carlisle Road, Lockerbie DG11 2DR and our speakers usually talk for 20-30 minutes, followed by a question and answer session. Club proceedings are reported in the District Diary section of the Annandale Herald. Membership costs £10 per annum.
Our annual programme also includes special events and lunches with partners.
During 2018 the local Club programme included:
(a) Nine talks by club members, with subjects including: BBC producer Jimmy Gilbert, wartime evacuation, national gas pipelines, UK plastic packaging, Amazon river cruise, Frederic Spencer Chapman DSO, wartime in Wick, living in 1990’s Singapore, vehicles and history 1950s to 1970s.
(b) Five guest speaker talks, with subjects including: Birth of Anglo-Scottish Railways, Farming Journalism, Second Boer War, Wanlockhead Museum Trust, and Role of Annandale Ward Officer.
(c) Two locally-publicized Open Meetings with specialist speakers covering Model Railways as a Hobby, and the history of the settlement on the Pitcairn Islands after the mutiny on the Bounty.
(d) Members and partners day-out to Devil’s Porridge Museum, Eastriggs.
(e) Summer and New Year lunches, with partners.
(f) Putting Challenge and presentation lunch at Lochmaben Golf Club, with partners.
(g) Clayson Trophy Quiz and Hancock’s Half-Hour Quiz.
During 2019 our guest speakers address subjects as varied as: military history topic “Evolution of Firearms”, social history topics “Dr Jack Wilson, Lochmaben” and “Wanlockhead Museum Trust”, and local author Miller Caldwell reviewing his double-agent spy novel/biography “The Reluctant Spy”.
A members’ & partners’ day-out to the Savings Bank Museum and Ruthwell Cross is planned.
