The Didsbury Probus Club invites you to our next scheduled Speaker Meeting on Thursday 21st May 2026.  
 
Venue: Didsbury Baptist Church on the corner of School Lane and Beaver Road opposite Didsbury Metrolink, M20 6SX.

Time:  We will meet at 10:30 am  for tea/coffee and biscuits with the talk starting at 11.00am.
 
Talk Title: The Great Manchester Art Exhibition of 1857
This is the largest art exhibition ever to be held in the UK, and possibly the world, showcasing over 16,000 works of art.
So how did Manchester the leading City of the Industrial Revolution become the destination for this new Crystal Palace, of enormous size, to be built to house this exhibition lasting 6 months with 1.3 million visitors? Also what were the lasting benefits for Manchester?

Future talks
4th June –  Titanic Survivors and Their Stories  – Mark Llewellin
An interesting story of some of the survivors, who they were, their background and particularly what happened in their lives afterwards.
Mark will be delivering  these surprising experiences with his usual enthusiasm.

18th June – My Life In Crime – Part 2  – Simon Michael
Simon Michael QC now an Author after 37 years as a Barrister working at the Old Bailey and other criminal courts, both defending and prosecuting a wide range of murderers, armed robbers etc. Some of these cases will be featured in his talk.

2nd July  – The Reluctant Shepherdess – Rosie Lee
Having a career in Banking and then suddenly having to make a decision, to leave banking or take over the family farm.
This is the story of some of the problems, pitfalls and success along this journey in becoming a Shepherdess.

16th July 2026 – The Arctic and it’s Future – Terry Callaghan.
Prof. Callaghan has worked in every Arctic country in the world; his illustrated talk gives examples of changes in the Arctic, their local consequences and the implications for the rest of the world.

6th Aug 2026 – “Does the Criminal Justice System Work”? – Martin Rowley
This talk covers:- Parliament making Laws; who can charge you with a criminal offence; what happens in court, and in prison; also how does the Probation system work.

20th Aug 2026 – The Libraries of Manchester – John Carpenter 
John gives a visual walk around five of Manchester Libraries.
Why were they built? Their social histories. Who went to these early libraries in these different areas.
He also looks at the introduction of Carnegie Funded Libraries.

3rd Sept 2026 – Moors Murders – A true detective story – Alan Kibble.
The story of Alan’s participation in the fascinating detective work involved in the reinvestigation of the Moors Murders.

17th Sept 2026 – A World of Mules and Minders – Brian Topping
Brian will share his experiences as  a customs officer.  He will guide us through the background and history of drug smuggling, providing examples of detection and investigation  skills of officers in maintaining their success and some anecdotes from when things didn’t go “quite right” for the smugglers.

1st Oct 2026 – A.I. It’s Impact on Society – Chris Goswami
Artificial Intelligence and it’s impact on society is a very fast changing use of technology, some aspects are very good and important, others very bad and many we don’t even know exist.
Come and be surprised by the extent of it’s influence.
