In 1981, thirty men gathered to form a club to promote friendship and the interchange of ideas among retired and semi-retired professional and businessmen. Today their aims and objects remain the same, although our membership has grown somewhat. The club is an autonomous organisation, i.e. we have no affiliations with other bodies, and are not involved in charitable work or fund-raising; it exists solely for the benefit of our members.

In 2021, our neighbouring Probus club in Bridport was obliged to close due to falling numbers, so we extended an invitation for their remaining members to join us, which they willingly accepted. Subsequently the club was re-named ‘The Probus Club of Beaminster and Bridport’.

We meet for coffee and a talk by one of our members at the Red Lion, Beaminster on the second Monday of each month, followed by a two-course lunch and talk by a guest speaker at the Haddon House Hotel, West Bay, Bridport on the fourth Monday.

Prior to the Corona pandemic, we organised visits to places of interest, i.e. Hinckley Point ‘B’ nuclear power station, the Tank Museum workshops at Bovington, the Met. Office in Exeter and Amsafe (Bridport). As things gradually return to normal, we hope to re-introduce a programme of visits.

In June and December we invite our wives/partners to join us for a three-course lunch as a ‘thank you’ for allowing us off the rein for two days of each of the other ten months!
